Art & GFX // Forum Rules

  • Respect others and their work - When posting and critiquing people's work please treat them with the respect that they deserve. This also applies to the person receiving the critique. We do not want critiques that are more like insults than helpful advice. Nor do we want people getting angry at others who just gave them a critique. Just because they critique does not mean they do not understand your "creative genius" they were simply giving their opinion and advice; so please treat them with the same respect they showed you. ^__^

  • Do not spam - Please do not spam our forum, this includes double posting without need, two-way conversations (one or two posts in a row is ok, but anymore than that and y'all should just get a room... I mean PM each other) and flooding the forum (creating a thread for each different GFX or artwork) we ask that you confine your work to the one thread. If you come back and your thread is on page 3 then it is ok to make a new one but please do not make a new thread for each piece of GFX or Art that you have.  This also includes making topic which already have threads in existence such as "rate my sig" threads and "request" threads, as there are two threads always open for such things.

  • Criticism -

Section 1: Get in the Right Mindset
Before you can actually start giving good criticism, you need to be thinking in the right pattern.

    - You Are Not the Best
Not one person on the face of this earth is the greatest signature maker or renderer. Acting like you know everything does not help the artist improve their ability. It actually makes them feel worse about their creations, and will have no inner faith in themselves to do better.
    - You Are Happy
When your mad or upset about something, you are more likely to give negetive criticism than positive, constructive criticism. Avoid replying to threads if you know you're in a bad mood.

Section 2: Reviewing & Replying to the Piece

    - Look Over the Creation as a Whole
Nitpicking over every fine-tune detail normally does not help the creator fix a fault. "You missed that small upper-right corner of the left side of her hair" is not something really worth describing like that. Simply reply "Some sections of the hair didn't get cut".
    - What the Artist is Trying to Convey > Personal Feelings
Even in a simple signature, there is often some emotion or theme the artist is trying to explain to you. Instead of saying things like "I don't like the size of that signature" rephrase it to say "It's an odd size for a signature". Think of it like journalism -- don't put yourself in it.
    - Divide the Review into Sections
To help tell the artist what their lacking, try dividing up the review into different sections. Inu's reply here is a great example of how to form your reply. Course you can take it and make things in your own style, it's just much easier for people to learn with a point system and small overall comments.

Section 3: Being Too Picky (Rant)

I thought this deserved it's own little section, but it will be more of a rant. I've come to realize personally that how you phrase your words can easily affect how the reader will see your review. There is a difference from picking something apart inch by inch and telling it like it is. Richter is actually a good critic. He tells it just like how he sees it, but he's not looking to start something. But when you start looking for every minute detail, it seems like all you are doing is picking on the artist's abilities. We all have something to learn from each other, so play nice so we all benefit.

I'm not trying to say that the way a person reviews is wrong, this is just simply a way to help get the most out of a constructive criticism. It goes a long way.
(Animerender provided this guide to make good criticism)

  • Constructive Posting - You no longer NEED to make a constructive post in someone's thread, BUT, if the owner of the thread ASKS for critiques and constructive comments, then you STILL have to give them those constructive comments first. To sum it up, it's up to the owner of the thread, BUT that doesn't mean that two-waying is allowed. If you want to do that, go to RB. This is still an art and GFX forum.

  • DO NOT STEAL SHIT!!! - Unbelievably simple. If you have stolen someone else’s artwork and we find out (which we are actually quite good at doing) you will be banned, not just from GFX but all of RR. Thank you and have a nice day, we hope you trip on the last step. Kind of thing.  So in other words, post your own work. If there is a part of it that isn't yours, for example when making a GFX you use a brush that isn't yours, say who made it and/or post a link to it. Same goes for characters or pictures you use in a GFX, please post a link to what the original picture was. Wink (Note that you do not have to post a link to the original picture, we would just prefer it if you did.)

Ok those are the basic forum rules. Please follow and respect them.
